FREE! Movies Under the Stars: “Annie” at Valor Park
Growing up in Pennsylvania, one of my favorite things to do on a warm summer night was to attend our local drive-in movie theater. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized “drive-in movies” weren’t popular everywhere, and many people have never had the pleasure of piling themselves and eleven of their closest friends into a car and heading to the drive-ins. Here in the Grand Strand, we’re lucky to have something (dare I say) even better: free outdoor movies!
Many local parks offer free outdoor movies, including Riverfront Park (Conway) (movie schedule available here), Martin Field (Surfside Beach), McLean Park (North Myrtle Beach), and Valor Park (Myrtle Beach). Karen, Hannah, and I decided to see the 1982 version of Annie this past Friday night in Valor Park (part of Market Common). This event is known as “Movies Under the Stars” and occurs every Friday throughout the summer in Valor Park.
We arrived around dusk, and had just missed the very beginning of the movie (I suggest arriving a little before dusk). There were over 200 people present, and although we got there later than most, we were still able to find a great spot. We spread out our blanket (courtesy of Karen) and enjoyed some of out freshly popped popcorn (again, thanks Karen!) while making ourselves comfortable. We were surrounded by families enjoying the film; one particular little girl (no more than three) caught my attention as she knew the words to every song throughout the movie and wasn’t afraid to show everyone.
If you aren’t fortunate enough to have a friend as prepared and awesome as Karen, there were vendors selling popcorn and Cold Stone Creamery had a stand where you could buy ice cream. It was definitely a fun night and I am grateful to live in an area that offers so many options to enjoy free outdoor movies. I can’t wait to check out the rest of the locations (don’t worry, we’ll be sure to tell you about them as well!).
You and your family can enjoy other “Movies Under the Stars” at Valor Park each Friday throughout the summer. I’ve included the full schedule below for your viewing pleasure:
