FREE! Movies After Dark – Mr. Peabody & Sherman – in Surfside Beach
Surfside Beach, “the family beach,” offers another great local venue for outdoor movies June through August. This week’s movie was Mr. Peabody & Sherman, an animated movie about a dog and his friend going on adventures throughout history in their time machine! I love adventures…and history!
This outdoor movie location is set up at Martin Field – a baseball field – between 7th and 8th Ave South at 710 South Dogwood Dr. in Surfside. The Town of Surfside Beach’s website lists the movie from 9pm-11pm, but the movie started around 8:40pm, so I’d suggest getting there before then. I arrived with my daughter and her two friends (Kelly was meeting us there) around 8:30pm and they had about 10 minutes to run around the outfield with other children. There is free parking if you park along the fence of the baseball field.
The Town of Surfside’s website lists concessions offered by Sophia’s but I did not notice any food as I was determining the best spot to spread out our blanket (however I could have just been pre-occupied). I did bring pre-popped popcorn, some candy, and water to enjoy during the movie and the kids brought blankets and stuffed animals.
The baseball field is located a block from the ocean so there was an occasional breeze that kept most of the mosquitoes away (but it is always advisable to bring bug spray) and brought some relief to the high humidity typical of a southern summer night. Fireworks occasionally burst in the sky over the beach (which took a few movie-goers by surprise) so you can view a movie and a small fireworks show all-in-one!
The Town of Surfside Beach shows movies on Thursday nights, June through August. To view the movie schedule, visit their website and click on their “Movies After Dark” link listed on Thursdays.
There is one more movie this summer season: August 14th – Rio 2
But mark your calendar for movie night on Thursdays at Martin Field for next summer!
